2010: SPACE ODYSSEY CAMP -

WE WENT TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!

By: Danielle Flores, Camp Director

It’s hard to believe that as I sit here and type, I am already reminiscing about Camp Notaclotamongus’ second year of camp!  It seems like it was just yesterday that camp was a twinkle in the eyes of Bridget and I!  But, here I am reporting on another successful camp session.  Last year, it was easily determined that camp was a success because everything was positive and went off without a hitch.  This year, however, I have had to give some serious thought as to how exactly we will measure our success each year of camp.  These are some gauges that I used:

  • We grew our total campership by almost 46% over last year!!!
  • Our girl’s cabin grew by 250% over last year!!!
  • We awarded SEVEN “Big Stick Awards,” eight if you count RN Nell!
  • We successfully added a whole additional day to camp… We had plenty to keep us busy having fun and no one packed up early!
  • The most serious injuries (and really only injuries) at camp were from scraped toes and blisters from fun in the pool and inflatables and bug bites!
  • Everyone who dropped off a camper, was able to pick one back up on Saturday!
  • Our camp mascot – the alien – is now comfortably resting back home in my basement, a little worn for the wear, but in one piece after LOTS of adventures last week!

Seriously, though – camp again, was great!  We have a TRULY amazing group of kids that leave me in awe each time I visit the “Med Shed” to watch infusions.  I can’t thank you enough for sharing these ‘martians’ with us this year and allowing me to do what I do.  Each camper truly owns a piece of my heart that is filled each year at camp.  I am truly blessed.

I am also blessed with a STAR STELLAR STAFF and OUT OF THIS WORLD HEALTH CREW!  They are the back bone of this camp and are acknowledged later in this newsletter.  I will say again that we have the BEST medical staff of any camp in the country, especially our Medical Director Dr. Puetz, even though I suspect he may have pushed the envelope by writing a doctor’s excuse for the eldest, Cabin 6, Jupiter, stating that they were late to breakfast due to a rare case of African Sleeping Sickness… hmmm…

Last, but not least, our donors are also SUPERSONIC, so please read about them and THANK them the next time you have a chance – they make camp possible!!!
