Scholarship Program

The Gateway Hemophilia Association (GHA) is sponsoring scholarships to aid and encourage post high school education for students with hemophilia or a related bleeding disorder. Awards are made without regard to race, color, creed, sex, religion, age, handicap or national origin.

Eligibility

Students diagnosed with hemophilia or related disorders are eligible to apply if they are:

  • high school seniors, high school graduates or equivalent (GED), or post-secondary school students.
  • currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course of study (a minimum of 12 credit hours) at an accredited vocational/technical school, undergraduate college or university, or graduate school. Students must have been accepted by the institution during the year for which the scholarship is given and must be enrolled with the designated institution no later than September of that year.
  • residing in the GHA service area of eastern Missouri or southern Illinois. (Physician signing medical certificate must practice in the geographical area of the GHA.)

The Scholarship Award

The Gateway Hemophilia Association will award scholarships in the amount of $1000 per student, per year of qualifying study. Student may receive up to a total of $4000.

Application Procedure

It is the responsibility of the applicant to gather and submit all necessary information required for consideration. Please note that applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, it is important to answer all questions as completely as possible. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by the GHA Scholarship Committee.
Interested students must complete the Scholarship Application(also available upon written or verbal request from our office) and send it together with the current transcripts of grades postmarked no later than March 31 to:

Selection of Recipients

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of their potential to succeed, academic achievement, leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, statement of educational and career goals, how having a bleeding disorder has affected personal and family circumstances, and references. The deadline for application is March 31. Applicants will be notified by May 15.

Any applicant not selected in one year may reapply in any later year for which he or she is eligible.

Renewal Requirements

Scholarships may be renewed for an additional three years, but applicants must reapply before March 31. The GHA makes no guarantee that funding will be available in subsequent years.

After the first of the year, please call the office and the GHA will send you the necessary renewal forms. You must return these forms to the GHA along with a current official grade transcript for the term or semester just completed. Your application will then go through the same selection process as it did the previous year.
